1876 Winchester (circa 1882)
« on: March 31, 2015, 10:33:43 AM »
Just picked-up another Winchester Model 1876 . Yr. of manufacture is 1882 Cal. 45/60 wcf   24" octagon barrel, button mag. straight grip , plain trigger std. sporting front and semi buckhorn rear. The story from the previous owners was , the old 76 was a family members rifle and has been silent for many  years . The first thing I did upon receiving the old rifle was to give it a good inspection then dismantle it down to bare bones. The overall condition is a very sound rifle that shows very little use and appears to not have been shot much. The bore is very good and should be an accurate shooter. The outside finish on the metal has turned into a brown plum color with no pitting ,and the walnut stocks show very good with original varnish. Once the old rifle is re-assembled I will take some photographs and post them here. Overall a very Cool 76,,,,,,DT

I put an order in with Winchester- Bob yesterday for some new link pins and a finger lever spring and a mainspring. Giving the parts a good cleaning taking off some oil that has turned to a sort of grease  on the internal parts . Have some Turkey hunters to guide for the next 10 days or so ,should have the new springs and pins when I return . Will post some photographs and a range report as soon as I get it back together. Thanks for all the replies ,,,,,DT

Finished up the Turkey hunt early the guys taking their birds quick. The springs from ( Winchester Bob ) have arrived a couple of days early . The springs look great and will be installed in a day or so. If the weather allows will do some test shooting with this old 76 , 45/60 wcf.  PS. managed,  Not to break any bones this hunt. ,,,,,DT

Stuck inside the gunroom for another rainy day. Waiting on the numbered to the rifle stocks repair to dry ,I slid on a spare set of original stocks ,just in case we get a break in the weather for some test shooting. Sorry for the poor quality pic. When the sun comes out will take more with the correct stocks .Really like this little rifle.,,,,DT

That looks to be a wonderful shooter!   And in a great cartridge.   I am really partial to the button mag tube guns.
Doesn't happen often but I admit to being jealous of THAT one :)   Let us know who it shoot and enjoy!  The Madis book is is a treasure as well.

Hey Mr. Dusty, talked with my boss last week.  Last official day is Nov 30, still few months away but starting to get there fast!  Friend asked me recently what ya gonna do your first week retired?  Told him, shootin the 45-75 and with it being first part of deer season here in late November/early December, spending more time in the woods to try and get the rifle its first deer!!   ;D

That 45-60 you got there just says, 'lets go hutin'!!!!

Hey Dusty you been shooting your '76 lately?  I am thinking about changing out my 20" barrel to a rapid taper octagonal barrel,  likely 24 or 25 inches and a button mag.  Or a half round barrel of the same length.  Then set the rear sight back and the front as far forward as possible.  Add a nice recessed crown and see how well it will shoot at some distance.

Shot a few hot 45-90 rounds from my Winchester '86 LWT, pencil barrel, shotgun butt today.  Forgot just how bad a '86 can kick.  Last 45-90 I had was a 22" octagon barrel I had chopped.  Crescent was about as much fun and the carbine butt just a bit too narrow but better.  Hopefully the next 22" octagon we are about to finish up will be a little more pleasant with those hot 45-90 rounds.

More sight radius and more  barrel weight seems nice for everything but carrying the '76 on foot.

Hey Yahoody , all this flooding down here in Tx. has put a halt to my shooting for a bit. That 24/25" Halfround and button mag. would be a superfine shooter. Look forward to seeing it. As soon as these storms ease up on us , I'm ready to do some shooting with my 76 button mag. 45/60.Like you I enjoy stretching the barrel a bit . The more you shoot at 200 yd. and better the easier it gets. Keep shooting I enjoy reading about it, even if I cant.,,,,DT
