I traded my old beatup hat for a nearly brand new hat. The crown on the new one is a bit soft. I was told that Faultless Spray Starch would fix it. Anyone know?
BTW, why don't we have a forum for clothing and wearables?

Delmonico is the expert in this area ... contact him this BB or He's at the Fort in Lincoln, Nebraska

for my 2 cents
I would offer Bickmore's Kahl Hat Stiffener , Amazon or most western wear suppliers.

We do.

Two of them, not counting the 'NCOWS' forum.

They're called 'The Old-Fashioned Way' and the 'Historical Society' forums.

Been there for years and years.

Scouts Out!

My Dear Franklin -
As related by our Good Major2, The Object of Your Desire is Bickmore Kahl Hat Stiffener or thinned white shellac.

you would do a disservice to your hat to use anything else (such as spray starch or scotchguard)

from Del, long ago:

"If you don't have some hat stiffener, get some.  If you don't have a local source, think again, if your local Western Store don't carry it, get some white shellac (the natural kind) and some denatured alcohol and a spray bottle.  Mix it about 50/50 or till it sprays nice, too thin is better than too thick"

"Scotchguard is not good for using as hat stiffener, I've seen a lot of them that it was used on crack, hat stiffener (aka shellac cut with denatured alcohol) is the only thing you should use.  That is what all hat makers use, if there was something better they would use it."

and his long version here:

Thank you kind sir, been a bit busy at work.   I've seen hats ruined with people using other things for hat stiffener, hat stiffener no matter what the brand is shellac.  I think the bickmore is to thick and when forced to use it when out of the bulk we buy in gallons I reduce it about half and half with denatured alcohol, I like several thin coast that penetrate deeper than the thicker stuff.  Also the better the quality of the hat the less stiffer needed, many tend to use too much of it.
