where I believe I see you are going , Small Screen. I think you mean weekly serial ?

or is made for TV OK ?

I'd  offer "Lonesome Dove"  the original , and to a lesser degree the others in their earlier digression of timeline.

if you want episodic... "Dead-man's Gun"
I may be the only person never to see "Deadwood"  ::) ( it wasn't carried by my cable )
nor do I follow "Hell on Wheels" ::)

and I suppose need to give a shout out to "Into the West" being how I work on it  :)

I probably pick James Arness of Guns smoke.  Although I did enjoy Clint Walker in "Cheyenne" as Cheyenne Bodie.

Ward Bond and later, after Bond's death, John McIntire in "Wagon Train".
Walter Brannan in "Guns of Will Sonnett".
Always some of my favorite character actors on big or small screen.

James Garner in "Maverick," though the whole cast was great, including all those fine character actors who had recurring roles: Samantha Crawford, Big Mike McComb (Leo Gordon), Dandy Jim Buckley (Efrem Zimbalest) and a bunch of others.

First seasons of Gunsmoke Matt Dillon (a lot tougher and grittier back then) and Have Gun Will Travel's Jack Paladin.  Wanted: Dead or Alive and The Rebel's Johnny Yuma are up there too.  Rawhide's Gil Favor and Rowdy Yates are good ones too.

I've recently taken a liking to Cheyenne Bodie too.

Westerns prior to the early to mid 60s were much better.  Tougher, better stories, better action and less political preachy stuff.  (and black and white).

Bruce Campbell as Briscoe County would not rate as "one of the best" but certainly one of the most entertaining and likeable.

Lots of memories on this one. When I was very young I loved The Lone Ranger later Cheyenne, Bronco, Sugarfoot, Temple Houston, The Range Rider and Wagon Train. Strangely I never loved Rawhide nor Bonanza which I remember becoming very religious with lots of praying! Long forgotten is Boots and Saddles, very gritty and very visual, I loved it. Does anyone remember Frontier?

I have to say, I loved Deadwood.  Once you got used to the fact they were using coarse language to convey the coarseness of the camp and the quality of some of the individuals, it ranks as some of the best television I have ever seen.  Some of ian McShane's lines rank with Shakespeare in my opinion.   I also enjoy Hell on Wheels, not in the same league as Deadwood, but good.   I also have to say if we want to see more westerns, we have to watch the ones they are making.

others I enjoyed, the Tom Berenger western where he is an older sherrif and has a pinkerton sidekick.   I think, unfortunately, it only lasted a season.
I will also watch High Chaparel any time.   Always liked Cameron Mitchell, besides the fact he looks a lot like my father (morph him and William Shatner and it is down right scary as to similarity to dad)    Mitchell was way overlooked in my opinion.   His performance in Hombre makes the movie.

I watched Hombre last night again. Lots of good gunplay in it. The Mexican bandit stands out but the editing of the film makes it special still. Paul Newman ain't bad either.
