Scoped military rifles in Period (IW & SAW)
« on: August 21, 2014, 03:57:22 PM »
I know that the Confeds had muzzle loading scoped sniper rifles.    Were there any "issue" scoped sniper rifles from CW thru SAW? Which countries and rifles?

To my knowledge, none.  Even the Confederate weapons were private purchase by the individual.  (as were similar Federal weapons)
"Issue" scoped rifles appeared first in WW1, though private purchase weapons do appear here and there in most of the conflicts of the latter Victorian era.  A scoped Sharps was present on Reno hill at Little Big Horn, bought and brought by the Sgt. using it.

The reason I asked the question is that some of us(me) have problems with "iron sites"due to bad eyes/older age, etc.

Modifications are allowed if approved by the Ordnance officer (Me!)  While I cannot see adding glass to these weapons, I would highly reccomend a "Ghost ring" type sight.  Several are available that can be easily installed on the existing sight bases of these rifles, requiring no modification or alteration.  Perscription shooting glasses are also availible, for less than the price of a decent scope.

One of my favorites, I have a Mosin M38 set up with these.  He has made Mojos for Krags in the past as well as several other rifle types not listed.

Williams has a number of sights that can be used as well.

Drydock: Thank you for the information.  I had forgotten about the Mojo Sites.   Modern rifles (the ones I have left) are / will be scoped.    I will have to check and see if they have one for a chilean 1895, or my turkish rework (small ring).

P.S.   I spent 7 years active duty Navy 1972-1979.
Running around in the field as a squid, might be fun.  Now to find a 2XL jumper is the problem.

Take a look in the Grand Muster Pictures thread.  See the guy in Working whites on the Gatling?  They still fit!

If I ever get the Water carrier ravine stage used, maybe I need to bring mine out as a "guest gun".

As for an XXL jumper:  http://soviet-power.com/detail.php?pid=45002

I was actually wearing these at the Grand Muster.  The collar and cuffs are button on overlays, when detatched leaving a plain white working jumper virtualy identical to the American pattern.  Attached they make a decent representation of the old US dress whites.  And its cotton twill, not the polyester blend the USN now uses.  Much cooler.

You might check into a pair of glasses just for shooting. Have your optometrist set them up so the front sight on the rifle is in focus, that's the most important thing. Much easier to shoot at a slightly blurry target with clear sight picture than a clear target with blurry sights. Mine are not bifocal, so I can't read up close well with them either. Just single vision glasses set up so I can focus at about arm's length.

Special glasses might be part of the answer AFTER my cataract surgery in my right eye....Left one done  2 years ago.
GAF loads will make my cardiologist happy....He told me no high power rifles, after the triple bypass and the IED defib device.

Best to stay away from Martini Henrys and Snyders, then. I don't have one, but I think the recoil is pretty stout even with ordinary GAF loads.

OTOH, my Krag and Lebel kick just a slight bit more than a 22, with cast bullets and 11.5 gr Trailboss.
