5 in 1 die set.
« on: July 29, 2014, 05:05:35 PM »
I have this posted in the powder room, but no feed back as of yet. I purchased a C&H Tool 5in1 blank die set. The directions are very vague. Does anyone have info/advise on how to set them up. I know there are several posters here who use their Henry's for reenacting. Any help is appreciated.

Does anyone know of a link that would be of some help?

and for pre-made blanks:

I would contact the owner's of the first two sites with questions.  They might have a board they post to, etc., that would be of help.  On this board see:

Major says there to contact him for links on how to make blanks.

Basically all you need to do is to load the brass and then crimp about 2/3s the way closed and run up in a .44-40 size die if your rifle is a .44-40 or if a .45 colt I think they will chamber without sizing. Cut a piece of foam rope/caulking backing to keep the powder in.

I have a 5in1 size die with the set. It basically necks the casing. Would running it through a 44-40 die round off the crimp?

I've looked everyhwere and cannot find info on how to make these. Swanson and others probably won't be receptive of providing their loading secrets.

In the past when I loaded 5 in 1 brass to make blanks here are the steps I used.
1. prime case
2. add powder
3. add foam rope wad about a quarter in thick to keep the powder in
4. Crimp the case about 2/3s the way closed. I did not want to crimp all the way close creating a point, a bad thing in a tubular magazine.
5. run finished round into the .44-40 size die from my loading set for live ammo.

This is what has worked for me in the past. Today I use .44 magnum brass with a modified carrier block.

Thanks Sean. I'll get it try. I shoot my Henry live so I do not want to alter the carrier.

Also the reason for the die that bottle necks the case in the 5 in 1 set would be so that the blanks could be used in a .38-40.

Sean:
Now that makes sense. So, the case dosen't necessarily need to be necked down for 44-40 or .45LC?

All that is needed is to run into a .44-40 size die if being used in a .44-40
