Odd '58
« on: July 23, 2014, 04:06:27 AM »
Local dealer showed me a '58 Rem. he traded for the other day and wanted me to go over. I am somewhat perplexed. It's an Armi San Marco made in the 80's that looks unfired, BUT it has a Colt barrel address!!  :-\  ???

Obviously, this was done post manufacture, but why a Colt address?  ???

It may have been a stamping mistake at the factory.  My Grandfather once had a vehicle with Chevy markings on one side and GMC on the other. ::)

Could be. I took it back to the new owner all oiled up and cleaned. Oh well.

A possibility that someone took a Colt 2nd or 3rd gen barrel and threaded it to go into a remington frame, but that would be unlikely to be in 44 caliber....  ASM is a bit unpredictable, and may have been a mis-stamp, although it's hard to believe the parts maker could confuse the gun design that thoroughly.

All the speculations make sense but I am the only one that came up with the true explaination.
I believe it was one of the rarest 58's ever made...a prototype. Rem and Colt were secretly planning a merger thus producing a prototype to unveil at the 1869 SHOT show. Alas the merger plans fizzled and the two firms continued on their own design paths.
