My Griswold and Gunnison Revolver
« on: May 28, 2014, 11:55:03 PM »
This is the full-length version of my Griswold and Gunnison revolver story. The G&G revolver was one of the guns that came out of the Confederate States attempts to jump-start a homegrown arms program during the Civil War. The Griswold was essentially a copy of the Colt 1851 Navy revolver, though it had some important differences like a brass frame and a Dragoon-style barrel configuration.

For this video I created my own version of the Griswold. I started with a .44 caliber, brass-framed Colt 1851 Navy replica, and changed barrel assemblies. Then I made it so it could be easily converted to look like the pseudo-Griswold that  Cullen Bohannon's character carried during the first season of the television series, "Hell on Wheels".

A brass framed Navy was my first "love". I kept staring at it through a glass counter top but wasn't old enough to buy it. Good thing I didn't get it 'cause I know I would have over loaded it and shot it loose. I ended up with a steel framed '61 Navy that still is as tight as the day I got it back in 1968. But it was the "beautiful blonde" revolver that got me hooked and 38 C&B revolvers later I'm still playing with those  perCUSSIN' cap guns.

Good video and fabulous groups!

You need to get the black holster for it now.  Basically it looks like a black Mexican loop holster for a 5 1/2 inch SAA.  Love the video and post.  I just wish brass frames had a longer shelf life.  I have a .36 Griswold from Navy Arms that I rarely shoot.

Just adding my two cents to say thank you, Mike!! Really enjoy all your videos, but look forward most of all to the cap & ball stuff you produce. But you cost me a lot of money!! Every time I watch one I end up driving to Dixon's Muzzloading Shop to buy....who cares, I gotta buy something!! ;D ;)

I hear ya hellgate, my first cap and ball was a brass framed 1851 made by who knows who, but I do remember the "XXIII" stamped on the bottom of the back strap. It was years later that I found out that that meant made in 1967. I bought it new at gun store in 1969 for $60 when I was 19 and shot the daylights out of it with full loads until it shot loose in the early '70s. Didn't know any better back then as there was no internet and not much info out there. Even had a chain fire with it, The only one I've ever had with a cap and ball.

PS Great video Mike!

Mikes gun is basically built from a Pietta Brass '51 Navy with a Pietta Dance Brothers barrel assembly.  While many of Pietta's guns are "Never Never" they look very close from 3 feet out.  Pietta standardization and interchangeability make for some really fun guns.
Also nice to see Mike has discovered Slix Shot nipples.

I just watched the video and wished I could shoot as tight of groups as BDM with one hand.

Rusty...
I'll chime in, as I have one of the cappers in the pic.
The snail shaped capper is available at various stores.  It is made under the name of Ted Cash.
I believe that I purchased mine from Track of the Wolf.

Yup, it is a Ted Cash capper. I've had it for probably 20 years.
