First, let me tell you that the ROAs I pick up next week will be my first black powder guns.

I have never fired a black powder weapon before.

On other forums I everyone seems to say that the first thing to do with any black powder weapon is to switch to Treso nipples and use #10 caps with it.

Does the Ruger Old Army need this switch, and is the #10 cap the size to use with them?

I would really like to hear everyone's opinion on this ....

The ROA has the best stock nipples on the market.  They are stainless steel, have a hex head, and come with a GOOD nipple wrench.  (Almost all aftermarket nipple wrenches for the standard flat side nipples are JUNK.)  They generally do well with Remington 10's although some seem to work better with Remington 11's.  Buy a tin of each and try them out.  I switched to Tresos on my ROA's because they are more uniform in size.  (Every once in a while you'll get an out of spec Ruger nipple and it can cause a lot of head scratching figuring out what's wrong.)  Tresos also have a much smaller flash holes and this helps reduce cap blow back and splatter.  Go ahead and shoot them with the stock nipples.  If you run into problems you can change them later.

I agree with Pettifogger 100%, he is spot on with that opinion.
The only time I have bought new nipples for my ROA's is when I considered that they were getting eroded and causing back-blast.
This could have just been a fancy of mine but it did bring me a certain amount of peace of mind when in competition.
( I was heavily into bullseye (precision) comps at the time, a whole different mind-game). Roll Eyes
I have always replaced with Ruger nipples because I don't know of any supplier of Treso's in the UK,,,if anyone over here does know of one, I would appreciate the info.

It turns out that the guns already have had the nipples replaced with Uncle Mikes, as well as an action job ....

So this may be a moot point ....
