In the movie Gettysburg(1993) a Confederate scout/actor played by Cooper Huckabee wore a hat that I find fascinating yet I don't know much hat nonclementure(hope I spelled that right).

A picture would help, although putting a name on a hat style is like putting a name on a color, it don't mean a lot sometimes.

The one most hatters know as a pinched slope got to be called a Tom Horn after that style appeared on Steve McQueen in that movie and then in the 1990's Robert Duvaul wore one and now most call it a Gus, although that shape of crown can vary a lot, to most folks they are a "Gus." And they tell us movies really don't influence folks.

Great, I've been waiting for this. If you look at my avatar (that photo thing on the left) what style is that?
When I got it, it was styled similar to a homberg, but I crushed the crown down flat and just let the brim droop, front and back.
Does anyone have a link to hat styles?

Just like a lot a things a name can be what anyone puts on something, watch Lonesome Dove and then go looking through hats catalogs and tell me how many so called "Gus" hats look just like the one Gus wore?

One must remember, till the late 1890's few hats were sold as anything but open flats, except custom order for folks like Cody and Pawnee Bill and others with lots of money. Hats were shaped to suit by the seller, the owner or were just allowed to take on a natural shape by the way they were handled.

The owner has done extensive research on hats and there are lots of styles listed. Others may use different names for some of the styles.

Thanks Dr Bob, it would appear that I have something between 'High Noon' and 'On the Dodge' with a touch of 'Josie' thrown in for good measure, and concho's for a bit of bling!!

What's interesting and pretty well proves my point is that Stetson makes a "Big 4" which duplicates their "Big 4" from the late 19th century.

And RJTC calls this "Big 4"

Both Jim bBeke and Ritch Rand have done a lot of research, I don't know Jim boeke as well as I know Ritch Rand, but they as well as anyone else needs a name as a marketing tool.

So to put a name on a hat and expecting it to be standard are having a pipe dream.

Id's modern creases and brims. I've looked over as many photos from Old San Antonio as I can get my hands, or eyes, on. The most common crease appears to be the 'Peak', or as I was taught the 'Montana Peak'. I've seen one hat that had a crease real close to what's called a 'Cattleman'. At least 95% of what I've seen looks like the hat was just put on with no real attempt to crease it, some do look like the crown is a little flat but that might be the way they came from the factory. Many working South Texas Cowboys wore hats with a tall crown, it's cooler, but not all. I wear a flat top on my crown with a slight dip on both the front and back of the brim. I think it's about as 'Old West' a type as any.
And yep, Buffalo Bill anted big hats with creases to make'm show up from the stands. I'm sure that the Real Cowboys copied the Show Cowboys just like people now days wear stuff they see at the movie. (I've actually had other Cops tell me that they carry high capacity autos in case the get into a 'Die Hard type' shootout.)

All that chart does is show someone attempt to name creases, not any kind of "standard" in the hat industry. Sorry I am part of that industry and there is no standard to it, just like in the paint industry, there is ni standard to naming colors.

Ad for your San Antonio pictures, I'm guessing that the dates are pretty much late 1880's or later if you see that many "peaks." because that style got very popular about then, was one of Stetson first mass produced pre-shaped hat.

And yes, most hats were sold as 'open/flats" and were either shaped later or not shaped and just allowed to take on a natural shape by use and handling.

Each maker, or anyone with a tea pot, has his own ideas of what hats ought to look like and what that look is called. If there is an industry wide standard it's a well kept secert.
