Uberti Schofield success with genuine Holy Black
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:35:25 PM »
http://www.theopenrange.net/articles/schofield_big_lube_test.pdf

If this link works, you can read all about the success with running the Uberti Schofield revolver with genuine Holy Black.  I supplied the bullets.  Adirondack Jack supplied the brass and Rich supplied the Schofield and did the heavy lifting.

So, go ahead and buy those Schofield pistols.  Big Lube™ bullets will allow you to enjoy shooting Real Powder in 'em.

Nice results there Dick. I think alot of people will be glad to hear it. The Schofields catch a bunch of flack. Tell your friend to try Mobil One synthetic grease on the base pin instead of neverseize.

Howdy Dick      Makes me wish I still had my S&W,it was very accurate, but alas no Big Lube tm Bullets back in 1995 when I passed it on to a pard, who for some funny reason didnt want to have any thing to do with genuine Gunpowder.                        Adios  Sgt.Jake

The issue here is a reproduction gun that wouldn't function with Holy Black because of the way they failed to protect the cylinder base pin.  I contacted Urbeti and they told me that the Schofield was meant for smokeyless fad heathen powder.  Rich wouldn't take NO for an answer and went ahead and proved that there was a work around to the failure of Uberti to address the question.

His results are very easy to read and understand.  So, YES!, Schofield reproduction guns can work with Holy Black.  Now, I've got some shopping to do. . .

I know several folk making the 45 Schofield a success with genuine BP, using Schofield brass and 200 gr Big-Lube bullet.

I recommend an "organic" lube both on the bullet and base pin of any revolver fired with BP. Same for cleanup, use an organic product (water is easy to find and fairly cheap). Save all the modern synthetic products / lingo and the word "carbon" for the smokeless crowd.

If someone made a Smith #3 SA chambered properly (44 Russian), I'd give it a whirl myself.

Max: the J/P 200 rnfp and the 160 grain 45Slim should work just as well as the EPP-UG. They all hold about the same amount of lube, but the J/P and the Slim will also work in rifles, usually, with 45 Schofield brass.

The test and other testimony would indicate that there's no fear to running genuine Holy Black in Schofield guns provided that there's enough lube available to keep that pesky pin wet.  Also, good gun prep is a must.  Rich started with a clean gun and a well lubed cylinder base pin.

I'm shoppin' Schofields.

I'm in the bullet business, not the mould business. Maybe if there is enough interest we could get DD to stock them? I'll send him the specs if he's interested.

I'm keeping this over a low flame, but there might be a way that with a few of the most desired "custom" designs I could do batches as small as Ten units without charging a "setup" fee.

Slim, if you have a working drawing I'd welcome it.  You could send it along as an email attachment.  rrhody@spwl.net

The EPP or other big lube bullet helps a lot. The other key to the test is the small charge in the short C45S cases.  Small charge, good compression equals HOT, efficient burn, with reduced unburned charoal.   I agree anything in the Big Lube line would work.  The EPP makes recoil light.  The JP200 would be dandy for a little more swat if so desired  The original JP is a favorite in the short cases because it seats deep, allowing a small charge for that efficiency.....  The Slim 155 is another possibility.

I have all the different 45 Cal brass available and use each according for it's mission.  This mission was best served with the C45Spl brass.  The EPP-UG bullet was chosen because of the very high ratio of lube to lead.  Good compression, good crimp and good burn are all helpful.  I find it interesting that no designer bp was needed to make it work.  Simple over the counter black powder did the job.  That portends good news for Schofield shooters attempting to duplicate the loads.

One advantage of the little 150 grain EPP-UG is that it is quick.  The snappy velocity makes for great accuracy, especially when distant bonus targets are encountered.

Nope Cohagen,

It was a pard named Heller.  He ran the test, I supplied them lil boolits and AJ supplied the brass.  The outcome was encouraging enough that I'm shoppin' for some Schofields.  I'd like a brace of 'em with about 5" tubes.

Hey DD,

Wanna make a lot of people VERY happy?  Produce a Big Lube, 230gr FN bullet like the original Schofield pattern bullet.  I know I would LOVE to have this mold to give the Holy Black a try in my Laramie.  I have the RCBS mold in this design, but I suspect the lube capacity is a little low.  Once I get rid of some of this snow and it warms up a bit, I'll give them a try to see how many it takes to bind her up.
