Sir Charles......thanks for the time table for 2008.

Last Easter at the gun show in Calgary, I met a gentleman from Cranbrook, BC who stated that they had just started a cowboy action shooting club in that city (2007) and to come on down.  Unfortunately, I didn't get any more info regarding this at the time.

Have you heard anything regarding this club?

Cheers!

BCLD:  Cranbrook is an interesting place.  It is very near Wildhorse Creek,  the first Kootenay gold rush.  Fisherville was the precurser to Noname City, as the miners burnt it down to follow the gold under the town when all else failed.  There was a real gunfight there in 1862 and vigilanty action followed, until the Magistrate arrived.  A posse of miners followed "One Eared Charlie" to the Bonners Ferry area & filled him full of Buckshot for killing a BC Provincial.  Fort Steele followed later when an Indian was falsely accused of a killing actually perpetrated by the local big rancher.  Sam Steele set up a mountie post but it was abandoned when the indian scare blew over.  Now the remains are an Historic site.

To the point, alll info is welcome but I'll folla up next year.  I'm off to lay a wreath at the grave of J Wes Hardin!

Been to Ft Steele many times, Ol' Sam Steele reminds me of Hank Snow's song "I've been everywhere man"

If you follow Sam's trails, he has just about covered all of the Canadian prairies and most of it looking through a horses ears.  Smiley

I had an interesting situation regarding an apparent error in Sam Steele's "Forty Years in Canada", when I visited Ft Walsh in 2002. It was regarding the Terry Commission and Sitting Bull at Ft Walsh.

As soon as the Christmas rush is over I'll post it.  With apologies to the Director, John Ford....when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.  In this case it was ...when the legend becomes fact, print the fact.

Merry Christmas

I did make contact with the R&G in Cranbrook.  There is a posse, but their marshal, Don Michalski is a bit preoccupied at the moment.  I was unable to obtain their schedule, but will keep on top of it

Thanks Sir Charles.  I see that I didn't finish my previous post above.

In Sam Steele's book "My Forty Years in Canada"  He states that the meeting (known as the Terry Commission) between Gen Terry, Comm MacLeod, Sitting Bull et al, was held in the Officer's Mess at Fort Walsh.  Other writers over the years always used Steele's quote in their own works.

So, the last time I was at Fort Walsh, we were in Walsh's residence when the guide stated that this was where the Terry Commission conference took place.

I politely interjected to state that Sam Steele said it took place in the Officer's Mess.  The guide said that was the belief for many years until they recently discovered a primary source document saying it was held in Walsh's residence.

That document was the long lost official minutes of the meeting.

Now, how could Sam Steele be wrong?  Who knows?

I'm a believer that when the legend becomes fact, print the fact.  Grin

I don't think the link to the attachments work!  Give "Teacher C" a call and come on over.  I have been competing at this match for over a dozen years, though I missed a few along the way.  I'll have to miss this one as I will be in England, visiting my newest grandaughter.  My son & I will be shooting  cas near Bisley with "Paladin UK" and Ned Pepper GB".

"I hope you will join us Aug. 23, 24, 2008 at the Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association’s range at 700 Holker Pl. Malahat, BC.

Here 's some more info on Frontier Shooting in Victoria

Re: Frontier Shootists Shoots 2009:
We have been able to reserve the second Sunday of the Month for Club shoots/practise, so Jan. 11, Sunday coming will be our inaugural event. We should meet at 8:30 and together set up the stage and then shoot it. Perhaps there will be time for some critique of style or skill. It will be ad hoc for the first attempt. Feb. shoot is the second Sunday so we will shoot the match instead of practice although for some of us there is little difference.

Frontier Shootists Shoots 2009 Dear Cowboy Shooter:
Here is the schedule for 2009.
Malahat Ridge – Sunday, February 8 Rifle Range

Nimrod/Buffalo – Saturday, April 18 Shotgun Range/Clubhouse
                          Sunday, April 19 Shotgun Range

Headquarters 2009 – Saturday, August 29 Shotgun/CH/Rifle Range
                             Sunday, August 30 Rifle Range/Rangehouse

Bunkhouse – Sunday, October 25 Rifle Range/Rangehouse

I have enclosed the poster and registration form for the Malahat Ridge Shoot. We should have the new pistol target stands completed by then.
The Shoot is a week later than usual in the hope the weather will be better. So dust off all the equipment, mark Sunday, Feb. 8 on your calendar, and prepare to have fun at the Malahat Ridge Shoot, Feb. 8, 2009.

Frontier Shootists
Chris Jones “Teacher C.”

NOTE:  The attachments are PDFs that I'm not competant to post here.  On request, I will email them to you, or you can email Chris (cdljones@shaw.ca), or see Al Page at ISLAND OUTFITTERS.

Report on MALAHAT RIDGE

It was a chilly day in February.....!     But, 20 Pards & Pardettes showed up to start the new shooting season.

"Teacher C" ran a good match, but showed an evil streak with the sweeps.  One of the easiest to remember was the "Lawrence Welk"  ( Ah one (On 1), anna two (On 2), anna three (On 3), anna four (On 4)!)  The evilest was indescribable, and required many reviews with the shooters, and even then garnered many procedurals.  First the middle, then inside left, then inside right, and then outer left, and finally outer right!  And then again with the second revolver!

I was shivering, like some others , because I hadn't the sense to remember that while The Malahat is only 38 km away from Victoria, it has a whole different set of weather.  I feared I was going to embarass myself, and I almost did.  Three missfires on Stage 1, due to a faulty revolver.  I had replaced a hand, and probably didn't get it fitted right.  Luckily I had my old REGULATOR as a spare.  Only two more misses, actually I didn't shoot 'cause I lost track on another complicated sweep, for the match, but THREE PROCEDURALS!  Even at that I stood 7th overall, and first of two in Frontier Cartridge.

Top Gun was "Neut Reno", followed by "Kid Carson" and "Prairie Buck".  "Miss Beadazzled" was 5th, and top Lady.

"The Grey Fox" was, as always, the show stopper.  He distributed copies of the procedures for using WILD BUNCH firearms for regular SASS matches.  He came kitted out, and competed as WB category, even though he was placed in Frontier Duelist.  I for one, was impressed enough to review my own inventory, and realized that I already have most of the required gear.  Not sure I'm ready to change my alias to Lee Marvin, yet!

The best part of the match was the appearance of several new shooters.  Each one had a mentor with him, and each was made welcome to our sport & hobby.

I didn't make this shoot but "Teacher C" sent the following report.  It came to me with pictures, but I couldn't make them pop up!  If anyone knows the trick, let me know.

What I think is neat is the response to the newspaper invitation for folks to come out and try it out for themselves.  It looks like we actually have some new shooters!

Frontier Shootists’ Nimrod/Buffalo 2009 was a great success this year. At Saturday’s Nimrod, over 35 visitors registered to join western shooters in learning about and trying out our sport. Several young people were on hand to shoot rifles, pistols, and shotguns. This event was announced in the Times-Colonist, Thursday, April 16, which really helped swell our numbers. Everyone who attended expressed their joy and appreciation at the opportunity to see what Cowboy Action shooting is all about.

Six members demonstrated a standard 3-gun stage to the applause of the audience who saw our competition first hand. Several expressed interest in joining us and several memberships were sold that day.
Here “Prairie Buck” is explaining proper pistol technique to Matt and Rebecca Reynolds.

One stage had shooters load a single round and engage a buffalo target. Then they had to load each round singly and hit buffalo targets progressively further away. Buffalo paper targets with bulleye scoring determined the top precision shooter. “Neut Reno” took the win for that category.
Two new shooters told me they “had such a good time,” and wanted to know when was the practice day.
For all of you, Practice day is MAY 10, Sunday,
rifle range 9-noon. All are welcome.   Sunday’s Buffalo Shoot was shot under mostly sunny skies. No rain the whole weekend !
Eighteen shooters competed in the five stage shoot with “Haweater Al” taking top honors.
Other winners are listed below.
Because the focus was on buffalo hunting, rifles were used everywhere.

Dave Morris, Terry Bowyer, Tom Keiffer, Robie Petrie, Sybil Kangas’ head enjoy reliving the event.

Ladies Traditonal- Victoria Diamond
Senior          -    Neut Reno
Elder Statsman  -   Jinglebob                  “Everyone had a fun time.”
Ladies Senior    -    Miss Mary Spencer
Duelist       -    Wagon Master

News from the Victoria Frontier Shootists;

Cowboy Action Shooting:
In June the Victoria Frontier Shootists hosted a dozen girl guides at the range for an Introduction to Cowboy
Action Shooting. The young ladies had a chance to shoot pistol, rifle and shotgun. At least one of the young
shooters has been back for other shooting events.
On July 3rd one of our members, Joleen Wilson aka Victoria Diamond, won Lady Top Gun at the Cowboy
Action Shooting BC Provincial Championships in Kamloops. Congratulations!
On July 9th more than a dozen joined us for our first annual Wild Bunch Match. This is a new cowboy action
shooting sport based on the movie "The Wild Bunch" where we shoot a 45 calibre 1911 pistol, 40 calibre or
larger lever action rifle and a 12 guage '97 shotgun. Three categories are offered, Traditional which is shot
one handed with an original spec 1911 A 1 pistol, Modern which is shot with a modified 1911, and our own
Victoria Frontier Shootists' category of Outlaw where you can shoot anything that looks like a 1911 pistol,
any pistol calibre lever action rifle and any shotgun.
The SASS Range Operations I Course for cowboy action shooters will be held on Friday September 2nd
8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the main club house and will be taught by Al Wilson, SASS Black Badge Instructor. Cost $15. Course registration forms available through Terry Parkinson tdparkinson@shaw.ca, (250)
652-5603. For further information contact Al Wilson aka Haweater Hal 250 920-8707.

for this fun event and spectators are welcome. Shooter registration forms available through Terry Parkinson tdparkinson@shaw.ca. For further information contact Gary Kangas aka Grey Fox
