THE CIVIL WAR PHOTO ALBUM

Civil War CDV (Carte De Visite)

Photograph Album
(Circa 1870 – 1880’s)

A collection of original photos of major participants of the Civil War, Union and Confederates. Also Lincoln without his beard, Lincoln’s father and mother, their early homestead, Hannibal Hamlin, Stephen Douglas & wife, Alex Stephens, John Burns of Gettysburg, & many others.

The photo album itself is a leather bound book measuring 5 ½” x 7 ½” containing 25 pages with each page holding four photos (100 photos in all). The covers and binding are deeply impressed leather with filigree style gold leaf trim. The page edges are gold leaf covered and when the album is closed a distinct floral pattern is visible. The covers are held closed with two gold plated metal clasps, both in good condition. The title page of the album is printed in gold letters with title and name of the album manufacturer.

The overall condition of the album is very good with some minor warping of the cover possibly due to the way it had been stored. There is a minor page separation in the front and back of the album (see photos) that is easily repairable.

All the entries in this album are photographs. Most are original photos of actual people. Some photos, as in the case of Gen. Banks, are of a painting.

This particular photo being duly noted with the words:
ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS, IN THE YEAR 1861, BY J.B. BUFFORD, IN THE CLERK’S OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT OFFICE OF THE DISTRIC COURT OF MASSACHUSETTS

A few are photos of other photos and / or artwork.
