Rockcastle Rangers Club in Kentucky Hosts Inaugural SASS Shoot

Park City, KY., – Park Mammoth Resort’s Rockcastle Shooting Center, hosted its first Single Action Shooting Society event November 28, 2010. A permanent Cowboy Action shooting range was fabricated, complete with five Old Western facade stages spread out amongst the two thousand acres on the sprawling family resort. The titled match “Welcome to the Rock” attracted over thirty competitors from five states, all dedicated to preserving and promoting the history, spirit and sport of Cowboy Action Shooting by dressing in authentic costumes. Single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles and old time shotguns either original from the 1800 period or replicas are shot by the competitors in a timed event.

T-Bone Dooley, from Texas, a six time Classic Cowboy World Champion won the Outlaw Division and was the Overall Champion. Iron Maiden, the current Ladies Duelist World Champion won the Ladies division and Vaquero Jake, current Kentucky State Champion won the 1^st Buckaroo Division.

Nick Noble, CEO of Rockcastle Shooting Center said, “At Rockcastle, we are committed to creating a destination resort for all shooting enthusiasts that participate in various types of shooting sport events. We’re proud to provide all SASS members with a permanent home where monthly SASS shoots will now occur every fourth weekend.”

Shaddai Vaquero, Territorial Governor for Rockcastle Rangers SASS Club said, “For a first time SASS event at Rockcastle we had a successful match which drew top quality shooters. The potential for Rockcastle Rangers SASS Club to offer our members in terms of growth is unlimited and we are excited to begin building the next phase of the Old Western town.”

Rockcastle Shooting Center is the newest addition to the Park Mammoth Resort property which is developing into the nation’s premier shooting sports resort. Complete with a 15 Station Sporting Clays course, 5 Stand, Pistol and Rifle Ranges out to 1,000 yards and two 3D Archery Ranges, the Rockcastle Rangers SASS Club has recently been added to the family resort.

Park Mammoth Resort was built in 1964 and continues to operate as a 2,000 acre golf resort and family recreation destination. Nestled among the wooded ridges and valleys of the historic property, it is located in the heart of Caves, Lakes and Corvette region of south central Kentucky.

Fast Hammer and Evil Roy winners of the EOT Wild Bunch Match

With a 1911, a lever action rifle and a pump action shotgun, 61 shooters went through 12 stages during the first 2 days of End of Trail in Edgewood, New Mexico. This new side match in cowboy action shooting is growing fast and compared to last year’s EOT, attendance was doubled.

There are 2 categories in Wild Bunch and based on the type of 1911 used and shooting style.

Evil Roy won the Modern Class with Last Chance Morales and Robber Baron on second and third.

In the Traditional Class, Fast Hammer placed #1 followed by Matt Masterson and Crazy Kurt.

We will have more about the Wild Bunch Match in SASS in the weeks to come.

Wild Bunch Match at EOT 2009

End of Trail has started and shooters are rolling in to Founders Ranch outside of Albuquerque, NM. Warm-up matches was on the program on this first day.

This AM, three posses started shooting the Wild Bunch Match – six stages today and the remaining six tomorrow. I see the same big smiles in these type of matches as in the regular cowboy main matches and my guess is that in a few years, this part of CAS will be as big as the regular competitions.

I notice that there is still some work to do to get the 1911′s running smooth, but no one seemed to mind. All we heard was , “It’s so fun to get the chance to shoot the old 1911 again.” Many came from IPSC/USPSA to cowboy action shooting years ago and for these shooters, this is an added value to SASS.

It’s like having a chance to shoot 2 big matches during the week here in New Mexico. I agree. I have already ordered my CAS 1911 and a rig, so it won’t be long before I climb on the Wild Bunch wagon myself. Here’s a gallery of shooters from Marshal’ette’s camera:

2009 GAF ILLINOIS MUSTER REPORT

Posted by Shamrock : The day started a bit cloudy and cool, but ended sunny and warm. Fourteen troopers were present for the first Illinois State Muster held at the Good Guys Posse Dry Gulch Ranch Range in Winnebago, IL. Last Cigar and Sierra Hombre presented the colors and lead the formation in the pledge of allegiance. Last Cigar, our resident historian, gave a brief overview of Illinois role in the Civil war. Last Cigar also brought the colors, two 34 star American flags and the regimental colors of the 31st Illinois Infantry. He had several ancestors who fought with the regiment. T.K. Sackett brought his period cannon for display. We shot five stages that followed the theme of “Gen. U.S. Grant Fought Here”, with emphasis placed on the Illinois Regiments place in history. The first four stages honored four Illinois troopers who were awarded the Medal of Honor, the fifth stage honored the leadership of General U.S. Grant.
