In this episode of Gun Stories, it is all about Samuel Colt and his invention of the revolver that changed the world. The ability to fire five or six rounds without reloading made a huge difference in the history of firearms. Sam Colt set a standard, but his 1873 Single Action Army was a model he wasn’t even around to see.

Gun experts you’ll meet in this episode: Alex Rose, Gene “Evil Roy” Pearcey, Dick Williams, George Harris, Ken Hackathorn, Bill Laughridge, Jim Supica, Philip Shreier, Dr. Jack Atwater, Larry Potterfield, Gary Paul Johnston, Stephen Hunter, Jason Schubert, Ross Seyfried and Ted Nugent.

Hosted by actor and gun enthusiast Joe Mantegna (“Criminal Minds,” “The Godfather: Part III”), Gun Stories takes viewers through a history of firearms, from the heart of the design through its use on the range. Using state-of-the-art, high-speed photography, “MidwayUSA’s Gun Stories” looks at the operation and performance of each weapon, from classics like the Mauser bolt-action to cutting-edge firearms like the Adaptive Combat Rifle. Commentary from historians, shooters, trainers and industry experts make this must-see-TV for gun nuts.

In fact, Chugwater is famous for its chili, although “famous” might mean something entirely different in rural Wyoming, where the only thing I’ve seen in the last hour of driving are antelopes. No matter, we’re just passing through on the way to Deadwood, SD, and Wild Bill Hickock’s grave. Last week the crew and I were in Cave Creek, AZ, with noted gunfight historian, famous artist and editor of True West Magazine Bob Boze Bell filming wild stories of western gunfights and trying to avoid the desert’s not unsubstantial collection of rattlesnakes and plants with thorns shaped like a mountain lion’s claws.

But that’s COWBOYS, whose new season premieres July 1. COWBOYS celebrates all things Old West, and I’m always surprised how much of the Old West is still around. I live in rural Colorado, in an old mining town where several years back the cook at the local greasy spoon…er, gourmet mountain restaurant…dropped half a stick of dynamite into the stove as his resignation letter. Nobody minded that much, since we all figured it would ultimately help the food. Yes, there is a wild untamed streak that still runs through the West, but it is tempered by what, for lack of better words, is sometimes called the Cowboy Way, which as with most things can be summed up in the lyrics of a country, this one from bullrider Junior Ray:

“Time for you to shoulder down
Nod your head at the gate
Step up
And walk your talk.”

COWBOYS, hosted by top cowboy action shooter Ron “Tupelo Flash” Stein, taps into that great American mythology, We do a lot on cowboy action shooting because it’s creeping up on trap as the number one shooting sport in America. This year the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), the sanctioning body for cowboy competition, will hand out its 90,000th membership badge! Every week more than 300 clubs not just in America, but around the world, offer shooters and visitors a chance to step back into the wild, wild, West. Cowboy style shooting requires that the players not only use only the guns of the Old West, but that they dress appropriately (not a big deal in rural Colorado, where even my beagle has a cowboy hat) and choose an Old West alias…if you must know, mine is “Wolf Bane.”

How addictive is cowboy action shooting? Well, since we started with COWBOYS our producer, John “Picayune” Carter and director of photography Gene “Grizz” Moffitt are now out there every weekend, participating well as filming. This season, in addition to the wonderful stories of Bob Boze Bell, we’re delving deeper into the guns of the Old West with the help of the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in lovely Cody, WY — a town that Buffalo Bill himself conceived and designed in the early days of the 20th Century. COWBOYS was given unprecedented access to one of the greatest firearms museums in the wold…it was all we could do to drag ourselves away from the five museums that make up the Historical Center. and even then it was only to have lunch at the restaurant in the Irma Hotel that Buffalo Bill built and named for his daughter. We’ve got special episodes on both Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill, plus we’ll take you to a reenactment of George Armstong Custer’s worst day!

So this season, saddle up and come with us to, I believe as the phrase goes, “those thrilling days of yesteryear.” Because, in our hearts, the West lives.

Cowboys airs every Wednesday on Outdoor Channel.

First episode of season 8 air on 06-30 at 7:00PM | 06-30 at 11:30PM | 07-01 at 1:30AM:
