The Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture Presents Warren Earp - Western Heritage Days - A Chance to Be Part of the Old West!

Warren Earp- Western Heritage Days on July 7& 8, and now expanded to the 9th is an opportunity for Willcox to celebrate its heritage. At one time Willcox was the CAPITAL OF THE WORLD in the shipping of range cattle, which makes the cowboy very significant in our history. Many a cowboy has been a part of our history. One of them was Warren Earp . The youngest brother of Wyatt Earp, Warren is the only Earp to be killed and buried in Arizona. Gunned down at the Headquarters Saloon on Railroad Avenue on July 6, 1900, Warren lies in the Willcox Historic Cemetery.

We also had one of the fastest guns in Arizona killed in Willcox by none other than Texas Red. A name mentioned in Marty Robbin’s song "Big Iron on His Hip. Also the home of one of the meanest City Constables, Burt Alvords. And we of course have our famous singing cowboy Rex Allen, who got his start singing on the corners of Willcox. One of the largest ranches in Arizona of the past, "Sierra Bonita Ranch", owned by "Colonel Henry Hooker" and his decedents still are part of Willcox.

Remembering our heritage Willcox, celebrates the cowboys of that era with Friday nightıs dinner theater. It features Wyatt Earp, a descendent of the historic Wyatt, and his wife Terry. They will perform "DOC & KATE: OF LEGENDS AND LOVERS". Where Terry will do her one-person performance of the middle-aged Big Nose Kate and he will do a one-man performance as the older Doc Holliday. Their performance with a cowboy steak dinner makes for night that will not be forgotten.

We encourage people to dress in period costume. Join our parade on Saturday for a small fee, and you can win prizes!

We will have historic re-enactments from groups around the state on Saturday and Sunday. Ron Nix, a famous stuntman/movie star, and the Earps will be the judges. We will have a Quick Draw Contest for prizes, remembering the significance of the hog leg to the cowboy.

Also on Saturday, there will be a Parade of the cowboys of the past present and future. Saturday will include historic family presentations, where the stories of the families that helped to settle in early Willcox will be told. They will present the family history at the Sulphur Springs Valley Historical Society Toggery museum, where many a cowboy obtained his western wear. We will also have an authorıs book signing. Willcox is featured in many Southwestern books.

For leisure and fun, we have an Old-Time Country Fair, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will have an old-time flavor, including games for prizes, and arts and crafts. We also understand that Wyatt Earp will deputizing youngsters (for a small fee) to help him find the man, Johnny Boyett, who killed his youngest brother Warren. We will be having Workshop on the old time methods including: gold panning, ceramics and more.

The purpose of our expanding the event to Sunday July 9, 2006 is because we have added a Cowboy Breakfast served by our local Rotary Club from 7 am to 9 am, which will include pancakes, eggs, and sausage. Cowboy Church will be at 9:00 a.m. all in Historic Downtown. We will have the re-enactments and the Country Fair after Church.

Warren Earp - Western Heritage Days is sponsored by the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture. For more information and packets, please call us at the number below.
